What Is NATE Certification?
NATE stands for North American Technician Excellence, which is a nonprofit certifying program for technicians in the heating, air conditioning, ventilation and refrigeration industry.NATE tests trained technicians on their working knowledge, serving as the only certification test supported by the industry. NATE certified technicians demonstrate knowledge associated with their area of expertise and must pass tests demonstrating:
- Basic knowledge of how to install and service heating, ventilation, air conditioning or refrigeration (HVAC/R) systems. The technician must demonstrate competence in communication, math and science, ethics, safety, use of fabrication tools, hazardous materials, measuring temperature and humidity and basic knowledge of electrical.
- Each NATE certified technician must also pass specialty exams covering installation, maintenance and/or repair of the heating and cooling systems in which he specializes.
Three Certifications
- Installation technician
- Service technician
- Senior level technician
It's suggested that technicians have at least one year experience before taking the installation technician test, two years for the service technician test and five years for the senior technician test.
