When you shop for replacement air filters, you will find a wide variety of options. First, consult your owners manual for information on what size and type of filter the manufacturer recommends. You must stick with the same size filter; but, when it comes to how well it removes particles from the air, you have some choices.
Pleated replacement filters are the most popular and affordable of the high efficiency filters sold today. These do an excellent job of removing pollutants from the air, but do not restrict air flow to the point that it impacts the performance of the furnace. These air filters are categorized by how well they capture contaminants; the more effective they are at cleaning the air the more expensive they will be.
You will also see in the store the very inexpensive fiberglass filters which used to be the industry standard. Most of the experts say these types of filters are a waste of money and do very little to protect your system. If you use the fiberglass filters, dust will build up over time on the air conditioning coil and restrict air flow, which could end up damaging the coil.
If you are very concerned about the air quality inside your home, or are particularly susceptible to allergies, you may want to consider use of an electrostatic filter. These filters are designed to be used over and over by cleaning them every month or two instead of replacing them.
