A properly designed zoning system can save homeowners money, and reduce energy consumption when the air conditioning or heat is running. A zoning system can help save family members from having a thermostat war, and can turn off the heat or air conditioning in areas of the house that are unoccupied. There are four benefits to having zoning systems in a home; comfort, efficiency, control and quiet performance.
A zoning system will allow your system to operate only in the specific zone or zones the homeowner needs during the course of the day or night. Properly designed zoning systems can help save homeowners hundreds of dollars per year in utility and energy costs.
With a zoning system, each "zone" or area of the home can be controlled individually and set to a different temperature. The system will operate based on the settings for each zone; meaning it will not need to operate at high capacity for hours on end.
A typical two-story home with a basement is often divided into three zones for the most effective use of the zoning system. Zone one would be the main level, zone two would be the upper level, and zone three would be the basement. Each zone will have its own thermostat for optimal usage during the day. The basement thermostat can be turned down or off when it is unoccupied and the same can be said for the upper level thermostat. The main level thermostat will see the most action during the daytime hours.
For the most part, if a home's current zoning system is more than ten years old it should be replaced with a brand new system for optimal efficiency. An old system can be repaired but there might be too much work needed, making buying a new one the smartest financial option available.
